How Restoring Tahoe’s Natural Filters Builds Climate Resilience

What does a meadow, miles upstream, have to do with Lake Tahoe’s famous clarity?

More than you would think. In a healthy watershed, water flowing across the landscape slows down when it hits flat land, like marshes, meadows, and wetlands. When fast-moving water slows, sediment particles trapped in the churning solution settle to the bottom, leaving only clean water flowing toward the Lake.

That natural process helps protect Tahoe’s clarity and build its resilience to the environmental shocks from climate change. But a long history of ranching, building in those sensitive habitats, and forcing rivers and streams into artificial channels have altered sections of the Upper Truckee River, changing how water moves and how much clarity-reducing sediment reaches the Lake.

Keep Tahoe Blue and our partners are working to restore those natural functions. From Johnson Meadow to the Upper Truckee Marsh and restoration sites across the Basin, the goal is to give rivers, marshes, meadows, and floodplains room to work as they naturally should.

How Tahoe’s Watersheds Naturally Protect the Lake

The Upper Truckee River is Lake Tahoe’s largest tributary and has been identified as the largest source of fine sediment entering the Lake. That makes restoring this river corridor especially important for protecting Tahoe’s clarity.

Fine sediment matters because these tiny particles can remain suspended in the water, affecting the Lake’s famous clarity.

In a healthy river system, the river bends and meanders through the landscape. During high flows, water can spread across connected meadows and floodplains, where it slows down and sediment settles out before cleaner water continues downstream toward the Lake.

Meadow and streamside plants stabilize soil and streambanks, reducing erosion while supporting wildlife habitat. Restoration is about bringing those natural features and functions back: giving water room to spread, slow down, and leave sediment behind before it reaches Lake Tahoe.

What Happens When a River Loses Its Natural Shape?

Over time, sections of the Upper Truckee River were straightened or confined for ranching and development. That left less room for high flows to spread across floodplains. Instead, faster water can erode streambanks and carry more fine sediment toward Lake Tahoe.

Restoration works to reverse those impacts by stabilizing eroding banks, restoring native vegetation, and reconnecting rivers with their floodplains where possible. Sometimes that means repairing a streambank or reversing decades of development, so the larger watershed can function naturally again.

Johnson Meadow: Restoring a Critical Piece of the Upper Truckee River

Johnson Meadow sits along the Upper Truckee River on Lake Tahoe’s South Shore. Once used for ranching, it is now an important site for restoring streamside habitat and reducing erosion.

Keep Tahoe Blue has worked with the Tahoe Resource Conservation District and volunteers on restoration projects there for years. Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days have included projects to stabilize streambanks, remove terrestrial invasive species, and remove old ranching infrastructure.

Those targeted projects strengthen riparian habitat, prevent further erosion, and support recovery across the larger Upper Truckee River watershed. Just downstream, another restoration effort shows what the same idea can look like on a much larger scale.

Reconnecting a Missing Piece of Tahoe’s Natural Filter

For decades, the former Motel 6 property occupied 31 acres of sensitive habitat along the Upper Truckee River. Restoring that property has long been a priority for Keep Tahoe Blue because of where it sits — within one of Tahoe’s most important natural pollution filters.

In 2024, the California Tahoe Conservancy acquired the property with support from Keep Tahoe Blue and other partners. Keep Tahoe Blue contributed $100,000 toward the purchase and restoration effort and spent years advocating to keep the project a funding priority.

By late 2025, the motel buildings, pool, and parking lot had been demolished and removed. That cleared the way for the bigger goal: restoring the river corridor and marsh.

The project could eventually reconnect more than 750 acres of pollution-filtering marsh and meadow habitat upstream and downstream. Instead of treating the property as one isolated parcel, restoration can help reconnect a larger system that slows water, captures sediment, and protects the Lake.

The California Tahoe Conservancy is now planning the next phase, including river and marsh restoration and improved public access. Keep Tahoe Blue will remain involved as that work moves forward.

Johnson Meadow and the former Motel 6 property are different projects, but they share the same purpose of restoring the Lake’s natural filtration so it can do its job again.

Climate Resilience Starts With Healthy Ecosystems

Healthy forests, streams, meadows, and wetlands each play a role in how water moves through the Basin. Forests protect soil upstream, while meadows and watersheds give water room to spread, slow down, and leave sediment behind.

As Tahoe faces climate change with changing precipitation and more intense storms, those natural functions become even more important. Restoration will not stop climate change, but it can help Tahoe’s ecosystems better withstand its impacts.

Keep Tahoe Blue works toward that goal through science, advocacy, partnerships, funding, and hands-on restoration. Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days gives the community a direct role in that work.

Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days: Restoring the Land Where It Needs Help

Since 1997, Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days have brought volunteers, restoration professionals, and partners together to repair damaged ecosystems around Lake Tahoe.

It is Keep Tahoe Blue’s longest-running community engagement event, but it has never been tied to one place.

The work moves around the Basin because the landscape’s needs change. Volunteers have restored habitat at Johnson Meadow, Marlette Creek, Rabe Meadow and Burke Creek, Tallac Historic Site, Meeks Bay, and other priority locations.

Projects change with the site too. Volunteers may:

  • Plant willows and native vegetation to stabilize streambanks.
  • Remove invasive species competing with native plants.
  • Repair trails and close unauthorized paths through sensitive habitat.
  • Remove old fencing and other remnants that interfere with restoration.
  • Build habitat for ecosystem engineers, like beavers, to return to the landscape.

Sometimes crews return to the same site because restoration takes more than one day or one season. That is an important part of Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days. The goal is not to finish restoration in a few hours. It is to move the landscape another step toward recovery.

Those volunteer projects also fit into something much larger. While volunteers work on the ground, Keep Tahoe Blue works with scientists, land managers, agencies, and decision-makers to advance projects, secure funding, and protect restoration priorities across the Basin.

One willow cutting cannot restore an entire watershed. But thousands of hands, paired with decades of science, planning, advocacy, and partnership, can help natural systems recover.

The generosity and commitment of Keep Tahoe Blue’s donors allow this multi-decade restoration work to move ahead, so Tahoe can be prepared for fires, floods, droughts, and whatever Mother Nature throws its way.
