How to Visit Tahoe Responsibly

The choices you make while exploring Lake Tahoe matter. Whether you’re here for adventure, relaxation, or inspiration, you have a role in protecting what makes this place special. Follow these simple (and impactful) actions to help Keep Tahoe Blue.

Bring Reusables ♻️
  • Tahoe’s tap water is award-winning and tastes amazing. Carry a reusable water bottle, bags, and utensils to reduce your use of single-use plastics.
Stay on Marked Trails 🥾
  • Tahoe’s terrain is fragile. Sticking to designated trails prevents erosion and protects native plants and wildlife habitats.
Dispose of Waste Properly 🗑️
  • Use bear-proof bins for trash, food scraps, and cigarette butts. Litter attracts wildlife, pollutes the Lake, and disrupts the delicate ecosystem.
Leave No Trace 🚯
  • Take only photos and memories. Leave rocks, plants, and natural features better than how you found them.
  • Always pack out what you pack in.
Don’t Feed Wildlife 🐻
  • It may seem kind, but feeding animals can be harmful. It alters their natural behavior, can cause illness, and creates dangerous human-wildlife interactions.
Park with Purpose 🌿
  • Always use designated parking areas. It protects Tahoe’s meadows and forest floors from being trampled and helps prevent erosion.
Go Car-Free When You Can🚶‍♀️
Be a Visitor with Vision 💙
  • Every footprint, every action, every choice adds up. When you visit with intention, you’re not just enjoying Tahoe—you’re preserving it.

Together, we can Keep Tahoe Swimmable, Hikeable, Skiable, and Enjoyable for generations to come.

Clean, Drain, Dry your gear EVERY TIME

You have the power to make a difference and help preserve the Lake for future generations. Help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species and the introduction of new threats like the golden mussels that can survive on your favorite water toys, fishing gear, and non-motorized vessels. Here’s a simple guide for your next visit.

  • Clean your gear by removing any plant material, mud, or debris from boats, kayaks/SUP, inflatables, water shoes, and fishing gear.
  • Drain all water, open and drain compartments, ballast tanks, and coolers.
  • Dry completely. Aquatic Invasive Species like golden mussels can survive more than a week out of water. Make sure everything is fully dry before launching.

You Can Help Keep Tahoe Blue
