Stephen grew up on the lakes of the Adirondacks and, upon migrating West for grad school, fell in love with Lake Tahoe, bringing his family to the lake yearly over the past 30 years. His passion for Tahoe led him to Keep Tahoe Blue and a desire to help ensure that his family’s experiences are preserved for all generations to come.

While trained as a psychologist, Stephen built his career as a retailer, founding Restoration Hardware and serving as the company’s Chairman & CEO for over 20 years, opening over 100 stores, building catalog and manufacturing divisions, and taking the company public. Seven years after the public offering, Stephen resigned to become CEO of Sundance for Robert Redford, growing the business and profits substantially during his 5 years at the helm. After a stint in brand consulting, Stephen founded and ran Guideboat Co, which was acquired in 2018, 5 years post-commencement. Stephen has 3 children, 3 grandchildren and with partner Anja, lives in Marin and on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe.

Stephen served on Keep Tahoe Blue’s Board of Directors from 2019 to 2022.
