About Us
Since its founding in 1957, the League's prime function has been to monitor development and recreation plans, and to work with local, state and federal lawmakers to take action to save Lake Tahoe. Our focus has been consistent for over 50 years: We urge policy makers to do what is best for lake over the long-term. We try to persuade them to protect the public's interest in a pristine lake, rather than acquiesce to short-term political, economic or private interests. HistoryThe League started as a small movement of concerned citizens, but the organization quickly grew to be the most influential voice for environmental protection at Tahoe.Read more about the League's history.
AccomplishmentsThe League has an impressive record of accomplishment. For over 50 years, we've stood up for the lake, sometimes in the face of long odds, tough opposition or political unpopularity. Because of a steadfast commitment to our mission, we have been instrumental in every environmental success story here. For example, the League persuaded policy makers to adopt an urban boundary, thereby halting the spread of urban development into Tahoe's forests and meadows, and initiated the very successful effort to bring public funds to Lake Tahoe to protect and restore its watershed. Inspiring stewardship
Also, our online presence is reaching audiences across the country and helping spread the word about Keeping Tahoe Blue to tens of thousands of people each month. In 2009, we started a Facebook page to engage, educate, and inspire everyone to be good stewards of the lake. With nearly 80,000 fans in dozens of countries and cities across the world, the Keep Tahoe Blue Facebook page is a robust source of information about Tahoe on the Web. Join our page to receive reminders about events, issues, science, news articles and information related to environmental protection and low-impact recreation at Lake Tahoe. The League also issues print newsletters, electronic newsletters, action alerts, and a monthly email digest of environmental news articles we call "e-Newsclips." The League has used the "Keep Tahoe Blue" slogan since its inception. These words have graced its newsletters and annual reports for over 40 years. The League has distributed over 1 million stickers since the 1980s. "Keep Tahoe Blue" stickers have been spotted worldwide and have become an iconic symbol of love and protection for Lake Tahoe. The sticker is available for purchase in our online store, our South Lake Tahoe office, or at our Blue Business partners across the Tahoe Basin.
