Golden Mussels Threaten Tahoe’s Future

A watercraft intercepted near Alpine Meadows in late May carried an alarming stowaway: golden mussels, an invasive species not yet in Lake Tahoe — but dangerously close. This was the first known case of golden mussels headed directly toward the Lake, and it came within hours of being launched.

Golden mussels filter nutrients that fuel algae blooms, turning clear water green and making beaches unsafe. Once established, they encrust pipes, docks, gear, and there’s no proven way to remove them. Originally from Asia, golden mussels were first detected in California less than a year ago and have already spread more than 300 miles across the state.

The League’s Engagement Manager, Courtney Thomson, joined KRNV to discuss the threat and what the public can do to prevent an irreversible ecological shift. “Golden mussels pose a massive risk,” she explained. “Prevention is our only option.” News outlets from the Tahoe Daily Tribune to CBS Sacramento and MyNews4 have spotlighted the growing concern:

  • Watch the KRNV interview

  • Lake Tahoe inspectors intercept vessel with golden mussels
  • Invasive golden mussels reach NorCal waterways
  • Golden mussels pose new threat to Lake Tahoe ecosystem

Remember, prevention starts with you:

  • Clean, Drain, Dry all boats, boards, and gear between every use.
  • Use CD3 stations: available at Elks Club, Meeks Bay, and Sand Harbor
  • Take the Tahoe Keepers pledge and watch the how-to video
  • Schedule an inspection for motorized watercraft at tahoeboatinspections.com

The Tahoe Blue Beach Program

is Expanding in 2025

The Tahoe Blue Beach program continues to deliver results, having reduced July 5th litter by 97% in 2024.

Several new beaches will participate in the Tahoe Blue Beach program in the summer of 2025, including Kings Beach, thanks to the TOT-TBID Dollars At Work program. This North Tahoe Community Alliance program reinvests funds generated in North Lake Tahoe to support community vitality, environmental stewardship, and economic health.

By focusing on the “Three E’s”: Education, Engineering, and Enforcement, the program ensures cleaner, safer, and more sustainable recreation for all. Learn more about the Tahoe Blue Beach Program's impact and what's next.
