Connected by Our Love for the Lake |
You and Keep Tahoe Blue share a love for the Lake. So do countless others in Nevada, California, and around the world. It motivates all of us to protect this special place for today and future generations.
On this Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing a few stories of how affection for Tahoe is leading to powerful and impactful collaborations — with our conservation partners working to protect Chilean lakes, as well as local businesses, people, and organizations right here at home. That same spirit of shared love is what makes this work possible. When you give to Keep Tahoe Blue, you’re joining a community of people who believe collaboration is the most powerful way to protect Lake Tahoe. Show your love with a gift that fuels partnerships, innovation, and on-the-ground solutions. |

Placer County Considers Rules to Prevent Litter |
Data collected by our volunteers across more than 12 years and 2,800 litter cleanups reveal that plastics are some of the most common litter items at the Lake. The best way to reduce litter on our trails, beaches, and streets is to stop it at the source. That’s the solution we’re seeking — through collaboration. |
Our litter data and advocacy helped South Lake Tahoe and Truckee put ordinances on the books that ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles. Last year, we advocated for the Nevada side of the Tahoe Basin to do the same because effective conservation must cross borders. Now, Placer County is considering its own ordinance.
The community's opinions are crucial. So, last year Keep Tahoe Blue surveyed 60 businesses in eastern Placer County and found the vast majority support rules to limit plastic waste. We encourage you to voice your support too.
There are more steps before the rules can be adopted, so we’ll keep working for a litter-free Tahoe. |

Tahoe to Chile: Conservation Across Borders |
Picture Lake Tahoe 50 years ago. Now, instead of one awe-inspiring lake, imagine 23. That’s the setting in northern Patagonia where our sister nonprofit, Chile Lagos Limpios (Chile Clean Lakes), is doing its own lake-saving work.
Since 2018, Keep Tahoe Blue, the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center, and Tahoe Regional Planning Agency have exchanged lessons in conservation with our friends in Chile. This mutually beneficial relationship continues this month when Chile Lagos Limpios brings its latest environmental insights to Tahoe.
You can hear from the leaders of Keep Tahoe Blue and Chile Lagos Limpios at a panel discussion in San Francisco on March 6. |

Creating Champions for Lake Tahoe |
No one is born knowing how to use a bear box. We all must learn how to respect local wildlife, protect the environment, and embrace the pace and culture of Tahoe.
Now, a free, one-hour online training offers those lessons to everyone. The “Destination Champions” platform was developed by the Destination Stewardship Council with the support of local Chambers of Commerce. Keep Tahoe Blue’s own team members were happy to lend their voices.
