When Mark Twain described Lake Tahoe as the fairest picture the whole world affords, his vision didn't include traffic jams. For many Bay Area residents, today's weekend getaway to Tahoe is likely to include time stuck on congested roads.
The Tahoe region's small communities welcome millions of visitors each year. Last winter saw epic traffic jams when snow returned after years of drought. Each week this summer, tens of thousands of visitors arrived, ready to get away from it all. Most have no way to get here other than by adding their own car to our already crowded roads.
Visitors to Tahoe deserve better. Lake Tahoe deserves better.
