Outreach Associate

The League to Save Lake Tahoe (the League) is searching for a remarkably outgoing, friendly, organized and efficient individual to join our enthusiastic engagement team to coordinate our education center.  The Outreach Associate (OA) position is an incredible opportunity for an environmental enthusiast looking to expand their experience in environmental education by working at a premier organization leading the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue. You will be the primary greeter for callers and visitors to the League’s Education Center and Store (Center) and acts as the first line of contact for individuals interested in our work. You will also support the Community Engagement team in executing outreach events and programs.

RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the direct supervision of the Community Engagement Manager, the OA will manage the League’s Education Center and provide visitors with information about the League, the Lake Tahoe Basin and serve as the primary person responsible for making in-store sales. The OA will work with the Community Engagement (CE) and Citizen Science (CS) teams to ensure that visitors to the Center and at outreach events are informed about pressing issues impacting Lake Tahoe and the League’s campaigns to combat the issues.

Education Center and Store Aspects You will be responsible for greeting and addressing the needs of callers and walk-in visitors through professional and friendly communication of our programs, while informing about what they can do to Keep Tahoe Blue. You will make in-store sales and maintain aspects of the center including displays, publications, event materials and brochures as well as opening and closing the Center and maintaining organization and cleanliness. You will track visitors and assist in creation and implementation of strategies to increase visitorship. You will recruit new members through the Center and promote the League’s Tahoe-friendly gardens.

Community Engagement Aspects
Outside of time spent in the Center, the OA will help the CE and CS teams to create an informed and engaged community that supports the League’s efforts to ensure improvement and protection of water quality in the Tahoe Basin. You will do this by assisting the teams to prepare, execute, and recap outreach events and programs. You will also help organize and maintain the League’s storage units, equipment and supplies related to these programs. You will represent the League at community events, education and outreach opportunities, while also assisting in maintaining records and tracking of community engagement events, statistics and volunteers. You will work with the CE department to prepare for and execute League events and manage and maintain program equipment and supplies within the storage units. You will assist with trainings for the citizen science programs as needed including the preparation of materials. You will also be responsible for checking the info email account and responding or forwarding to appropriate staff members.

Other Duties
You will assist with setup and cleanup of regular staff meetings and provide general support to League staff.

WHAT YOU NEED

Required Job Skills

  • Associate’s degree (B.A. or B.S. preferred) with studies in environmental education, environmental studies, communications, marketing, nonprofit management or other applicable field.

  • At least one to three years of experience in environmental science, education, outreach or related field.

  • Interest in environmental conservation and the League’s mission to protect, restore and advocate for the health and scenic beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

  • Some familiarity with Lake Tahoe environmental issues.

  • Exceptional public speaking skills; comfortable speaking to members of the public of all ages.

  • Excellent phone manner and customer service.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Drive and social media including Facebook and Instagram.

  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of reliability in managing data and records using Microsoft Excel and/or Google.

  • Flexibility, patience and ability to work with multiple interruptions - must be able to refocus and set boundaries. 

  • Ability to work nights and weekends as needed.

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously.

  • Ability to work effectively with teams and diverse individuals.

  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors, potentially in inclement weather conditions; able to hike up to 3 miles.

  • Valid driver’s license, current DMV printout, auto insurance and dependable vehicle.

  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred but not required.

Organization specific requirements

  • Proof of valid driver’s license, current DMV printout and auto insurance.

  • Dependable vehicle able to function in any and all weather conditions including heavy snow for trips around the Lake Tahoe Basin, Bay Area, Reno and Sacramento.

  • Computer proficiency with Windows, internet applications, Office 365 and Google Apps. 

  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings, staff retreats and team building activities.

  • Attendance at annual benefit, annual meeting, July 5 cleanup and Tahoe Forest Stewardship Day events.

  • Maintain skill level through reading and trainings. Attend trainings as required.

  • Share in office cleaning duties.

  • Other duties as required.

WHAT WE OFFER
The Outreach  Associate is a full-time hourly position based at our headquarters in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Our regular business hours are Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm and our Education Center and Store hours are Tuesday - Friday, 10 am - 4 pm. In general, you will be working in the Education Center and Store during regular store hours and will work outside of the Education Center and Store as needed for events as requested by your supervisor. Due to the nature of the position and League event needs, some evening and weekend work will be required.

Pay range

$14 - $16 per hour
