Outreach Associate

The League to Save Lake Tahoe (the League) is searching for an outgoing, organized and proactive individual to join our professional and passionate Community Engagement (CE) team. The Outreach Associate (OA) position is a unique opportunity for an outdoor enthusiast looking to expand their experience in environmental education by working at a premier organization leading the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue. The OA will be integral in helping to design the League’s brand new Education Center (Center) including education displays, interactive experiences and integration with all League programs as the Center is in development over the next year. When the Center re-opens, the OA will be responsible for all aspects of the Center including greeting callers and visitors and acting as the first line of contact for individuals interested in our work. The OA will also support the CE team by tracking program data, assisting in program reporting and in executing outreach events and programs at the Center and in the field.

Under the direct supervision of the Community Engagement Manager (CEM), the OA will manage the League’s Education Center and provide visitors with information about the League, the Lake Tahoe Basin and be responsible for making in-store sales while the Center is open to the public. The OA will work with the CE, Citizen Science (CS) and Policy teams to ensure that visitors to the Center and at outreach events are informed about pressing issues impacting Lake Tahoe and the League’s campaigns to combat the issues.

Education Center and Store Aspects:

Prior to the new Center opening, the primary responsibility will be to work with the CEM and other team members to research, design and manage the Center’s development including educational displays and interactive experiences. Once the Center opens, the OA will be responsible for greeting and addressing the needs of callers and walk-in visitors through professional and friendly communication, while informing them about League programs and what they can do to Keep Tahoe Blue. The OA will conduct in-store sales and maintain aspects of the Center including displays, publications, event materials and brochures as well as opening and closing the Center and maintaining organization and cleanliness. The OA will track visitors and assist in creation and implementation of strategies to increase visitorship. The OA is also responsible for supporting the recruitment of new members through the Center and promoting the League’s Tahoe-friendly gardens. The OA is responsible for responding or directing voicemails and info account emails to the appropriate staff.

Community Engagement Aspects:

Outside of time spent in the Center, the OA will help the CE and CS teams to create an informed and engaged community that supports the League’s efforts to ensure improvement and protection of water quality in the Tahoe Basin. The OA will do this by assisting the teams to prepare, execute, and recap outreach events and programs. Pre- and post-event, the OA will organize and maintain the League’s storage units, equipment and supplies related to these programs with the Community Engagement Associate (CEA). The OA is responsible for maintaining records and tracking of community engagement events, statistics and volunteers on a regular basis which is a significant part of the job duties. The OA will also represent the League at community events and at education and outreach opportunities as needed.

Other Duties:

The OA will assist with setup and cleanup of regular staff meetings and provide general support to League staff.


Job-Specific Requirements:

  • Associates degree (B.A. or B.S. preferred) with studies in environmental education, environmental studies, communications, marketing, nonprofit management or other applicable field.

  • At least one to three years of experience in environmental science, education, outreach or related field.

  • Exceptional public speaking skills; comfortable speaking to members of the public of all ages.

  • Excellent phone manners and customer service.

  • Detail-oriented with a high degree of reliability in managing data and records.

  • Experience exercising flexibility and patience to work with multiple interruptions - must be able to refocus and set boundaries.

  • Set priorities, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously.

  • Effectively able to work with teams and diverse individuals.

  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends, as required.

  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors, potentially in inclement weather conditions and hiking long distances.

  • Computer proficiency with Windows, Office 365, Google Apps and social media applications.

Job-Specifics Preferred:

  • Familiarity with Lake Tahoe environmental and policy issues.

  • An interest and passion for environmental conservation and the League’s mission to protect, restore, and advocate for the ecosystem health and scenic beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

  • Bilingual (Spanish).

Organization-Specific Requirements:

  • Employees are required to maintain a current COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Employees are required to have a vehicle that is in good working order, will be required to show proof of current valid driving license, vehicle registration, and current effective insurance coverage on or before the first day of employment.

  • Employee’s vehicle should be well maintained, able to function in any and all weather conditions including heavy snow, and must be dependable for trips to the around the Lake Tahoe basin, Bay Area, Reno, and Sacramento. Employee’s must be able to transport outreach materials including but not limited to, a pop-up tent, folding tables and large boxes. If an employee does not have such a vehicle they may rent one at their own expense.

  • As a condition of employment, an employee must carry, at their own expense, the minimum automobile insurance coverage for property damage and public liability.

  • Must be able to sit or stand at a desk and use a computer for significant periods of time.

  • Position requires some physical activity such as bending, stooping, lifting and carrying. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and walk long distances.


The OA position is full-time hourly based at our headquarters in South Lake Tahoe, CA. Our regular business hours are Monday - Friday, 9 am - 5 pm. Currently, the position may be semi-remote, however, when the Center reopens, the OA will be working in the Center during regular store hours and will work outside of the Center as needed for events as requested by the CEM. Due to the nature of the position and League event needs, some evening and weekend work will be required.
