Founded by passionate locals and sustained by generations of supporters, the League is a pillar and model of environmental protection in the West — leading with science-based advocacy, innovative technology and policy, and community engagement. For nearly seven decades — reaching back 13 years before the very first Earth Day — we’ve worked to preserve Lake Tahoe’s famed clarity and ecological integrity, acting as both watchdog for the Lake and a changemaker in the broader environmental movement.
To honor this legacy and invest in the future, we created the 1957 Club — a community of committed supporters who share a bold vision for a clean, protected, and thriving Lake Tahoe. Inspired by the year we were founded, the 1957 Club reflects our roots and powers our progress — ensuring that the next generation inherits a Lake as blue and brilliant as the one we’ve fought to protect for nearly 70 years.
As a member, you’ll join others who are passionate about protecting Lake Tahoe, with opportunities to connect, engage, and witness the results of your support. Together, we create a movement that deepens your personal connection to Tahoe, builds lasting relationships, and celebrates the power of giving.
The 1957 Club invites you to be part of this growing network of changemakers.

Thanks to years of advocacy and partnership, a long-standing threat to Lake Tahoe is no more.
The League to Save Lake Tahoe is proud to share that eight miles of long, unused, lead-sheathed telecommunication cables have been successfully removed from beneath the Lake’s waters—a major victory for the health of this iconic ecosystem. This achievement reflects the power of persistence, collaboration, and the belief that Tahoe deserves the highest level of protection.
The League served as both watchdog and partner to AT&T throughout this multi-year project, ensuring environmental safeguards were in place every step of the way. Removal was conducted with care by J.F. Brennan Company and supported by divers, biologists, and archaeologists to protect water quality, wildlife, and Tahoe’s natural setting.
For more than 25 years, Tahoe Forest Stewardship Days (TFSD) have brought together volunteers, community partners, and conservationists to restore the natural landscapes that Keep Tahoe Blue.
Launched in 1997, TFSD is the League to Save Lake Tahoe’s longest-running community restoration event, empowering thousands to care for Tahoe’s forests, meadows, marshes, and streams. These ecosystems are the Lake’s natural filtration system —vital for removing pollutants and maintaining its famed clarity.
In the middle of the 20th century, unbridled development, stream channelization, grazing, and human use degraded many of these areas. TFSD projects help reverse that damage, boosting the land’s ability to filter pollutants, support wildlife, and withstand the growing impacts of climate change.
When the Caldor Fire swept through the TahoeBasin in 2021, it left a lasting mark on the landscape — and potential risks for the Lake’s clarity and health in the form of ash and debris. In response, the League immediately mobilized our Citizen Science Program to monitor what matters most: the water flowing into Lake Tahoe.
Thanks to the dedication of trained volunteers, the League monitored 10 stream sites that drain areas burned by the fire during the storm season that immediately followed the fire. These citizen scientists collected water samples and tracked indicators like turbidity — a key measure of how much sediment and pollutants entered the Lake.
Findings showed that the Lake’s natural systems proved more resilient than expected. But our work isn’t done. Ongoing monitoring is essential to understanding the long-term impacts of wildfire on Tahoe’s fragile ecosystem — and to guiding burn area restoration planning and fire resilience strategies to safeguard Tahoe from the next blaze.
