recreation

Lake Tahoe has often been referred to as a year-round playground and recreational opportunities are abundant. We must be responsible users of the area however, as it must be preserved for all to enjoy, including future generations.

Part of the League’s monitoring efforts include keeping a watchful eye on recreation providers and activity in the Tahoe Basin. Ski areas and marinas naturally have an impact on the environment, and the League plays an important role in assuring the impacts of such areas are mitigated as much as possible.

The League encourages users to enjoy low-impact recreational activities in the Lake Tahoe Basin. High impact activities such as the use of snowmobiles, off-road vehicles, and jet skis put a tremendous stress on the environment. When you are enjoying the great outdoors, abide by the “Leave No Trace” theory – leave the area exactly as you found it.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Always stay on marked trails when you hike or bike.
  • Enjoy the lake on non-motorized watercraft.
  • Consider snowshoeing or cross country skiing instead of snowmobiling.
  • Take public transportation to your recreation destination.
